June 25, 1979
AFA commissioner Payne Roye announces that the Tulsa Mustangs have folded. "The Oklahoma franchise was not acceptable because of lack of proper blend of ownership, management, coaching, playing talent, and overall football product." Roye takes personal responsibility for Tulsa's status. "It was a mistake to open up there in the first place. It was my mistake."

Mustangs owner, and head coach, Glenn Dobbs informed his team that after recently purchasing an oil and gas business he could not make it work. "I just got a late start on things. That combined with my commitment in the oil business have forced the Mustangs to cease operations as of now." If his oil business stabilizes, Dobbs said there is a chance the team could return sometime in the future.

Many believe the stiff competition from the North American Soccer League's Tulsa Roughnecks is another factor. The Roughnecks drew 35,000 for a home match last weekend against the New York Cosmos while the Mustangs drew barely 2,000 fans.

The league has decided that each of the remaining eight teams in the league will now play a 14-game schedule instead of their planned 16-game schedule. Teams that have 12 games remaining will be allowed to drop two contests they've played. Teams with 11 games remaining can drop three.

The new schedule eliminates open dates, which were initially created because the league had an odd number of teams to begin with. It also adds an extra week to the season.

Shreveport Steamer head coach Jim Williams was not happy with the league's adjustment of team records. "I told them the go back and come up with another idea. We lost 'em and I'd rather bear up to that and let all the others do the same."

In addition, the league has gone from two divisions to one, with the top four teams making the playoffs.

June 26, 1979
Alabama Vulcans owner and league co-founder, Harry Lander, expounded on the situation in Tulsa. "There was a financial situation where we needed to allow Glenn Dobbs to back out and have his money back for the time being. Tulsa didn't fold. We let it withdraw. Understand the difference? He could have continued, but it would have put him in a financial drain. A man in his state of life didn't need to take a butt-kicking."

Since buying his way into the league, Dobbs has had two major crises happen - the suicide of a business partner and a 50 percent reduction in allocations to his newly purchased oil and gas business.

July 25, 1979
Payne Roye steps down as commissioner of the AFA, naming current AFA president John Waits as interim commissioner. Roye listed "acute illness" as his reason for leaving the post.

August 21, 1979
Players for the Arkansas Champs inform coaches and management that they have voted to not play until they receive salaries due them. Champs manager Hershel Strickland has sent telegrams to the other 7 AFA clubs and the AFA commissioner informing them of their intent.

August 22, 1979
AFA commissioner John Waits removes Strickland from his position with Arkansas and the Champs will play on Saturday.
