 Will the GBA's Huntsville Lasers move to Birmingham?

    Global Basketball Association logoDonn Jennings, President and co-owner of the Global Basketball Association's Huntsville Lasers, announces the team will be moving before the start of the GBA's next season.

Jennings listed Birmingham as one of four possible cities under consideration. Florence (AL), Chattanooga (TN) and Jackson (MS) are also candidates.

The Lasers have been unable to work out a suitable lease agreement with the 10,000-seat Von Braun Civic Center.

The Lasers were 33-31 and were eliminated in the first round of playoffs by the eventual GBA champion Music City.

The GBA is a minor league that was started in 1991 with eleven teams located primarily in the Southeast.

   
         
    Jennings announces the owners have no other choice but to fold the Lasers after only one season. "The owners came to the conclusion that we should not play as a business decision," Jennings said.

Seven teams remain in the GBA.

      Due to excessive financial burdens and lack of fan interest, the Global Basketball Association folded on December 20, 1992, one month into the league's second season.
