Popular belief is that
the first Black Barons team was an ACIPCO team that defected to create the
professional franchise in the years following World War I.
In 1920, along with 7
other teams, the Black Barons became charter members of the Negro Southern
League.
Three years later,
the Black Barons became members of the Negro National League, which was the
highest level of play in black baseball in the United States.
In 1939, the Black
Barons were purchased by Tom Hayes, a Memphis undertaker.
1963 was the Black
Barons final season.
