The
Women's American Football League announces that
they have granted a license to the Alabama
Slammers, who will play their home games in
Birmingham. The WAFL is a full-contact
women's tackle football league which uses the same rules as the National
Football League. Plans call for a ten-game season with playoffs
and a championship game.
Carter Turner and Catherine Masters were the founders of the
Women's Professional Football League, which is entering its
second year. Masters went on to form the National Women's
Football League, which plays during the spring. Turner founded
the WAFL, which will kick off its inaugural season October 27
with twenty-four teams.
Players and coaches share the profits generated by a team's
ticket sales after all expenses are paid. The league mandates
that at least twenty-five percent of a team's profits will go
toward a player compensation pool. According to estimates,
players can earn between $150 to $500 per game. |
